Our way of working
Our sustainability work in coffee sourcing focuses on human rights, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and sustainable farming. We ensure that these principles are followed by sourcing coffee only from sources that have been verified sustainable by third-party partners.
Green coffee sourcing
We buy over 35 million kilos of green coffee annually. We receive coffee from more than 15 countries around the world, including Kenya, Ethiopia, Brazil and Colombia. Brazil and Colombia are the largest sourcing countries.
Taste the change
Paulig is a family-owned company, growing a new, sustainable food culture – one that is good for both people and the planet. In addition to coffee, Paulig provides also Tex Mex and spice products, snacks and plant-based choices. We have set ourselves an ambitious goal of being a sustainable frontrunner in the food and beverage industry.
Carbon neutral Mundo coffee
We continue to reduce the climate impact of coffee value chain. The Paulig Mundo coffee family has a CarbonNeutral® product certification in accordance with The CarbonNeutral Protocol. The total emissions of the carbon-neutral coffee are offset through Climate Impact Partners by supporting forest projects in the coffee origins that have been verified according to international standards for example in Colombia and Brazil.
Partnership programmes
Certifications are one way of verifying the sustainability of green coffee. In addition, we source coffee through carefully selected and third-party sustainable verified partnership programs. Through the partnership programs we are able to have a long term partnership and development with the farmers and farming communities - strive together for a better and more sustainable coffee farming.

Read moreThe Organic certificate is always combined with the Fairtrade certificate in Paulig’s coffees, which means that in addition to the environmental responsibility, social responsibility is also taken into consideration. Science-based climate targets
We have science-based climate targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. We are working to do our share of limiting the global temperature rise to a maximum of 1.5°C in our operations and value chain. Our ambition is that by 2030, we will reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations by 80% and our value chain by 50% compared to 2018.

Our climate projects accelerate sustainable farming practices
Read moreThe majority of the carbon footprint (nearly 70%) of coffee comes from the growing of coffee beans in the countries of origin. Therefore, agricultural transformation is the key to achieving a sustainable coffee value chain. Our multi-year projects in Brazil, Colombia, and Nicaragua support farmers in the sustainable and profitable cultivation of coffee. The projects are tailored in co-operation with our partners and the farming community to suit the local needs of the area in question.

Vuosaari roastery is a Carbon Neutral® building
Read moreThe roastery’s location in the Vuosaari harbour area is optimal as raw coffee shipments from the countries of origin mainly arrive in Finland by sea. More than 200 different end products are produced and around 60 million packets of coffee leave the carbon neutral certified factory each year.
Sustainable coffee packaging goals
Read moreIn addition to our climate and nature goals, we are committed to promoting circular economy. Our aim is that by the end of 2025, all our packaging will be recyclable, and by 2030, they will be made from renewable or recycled materials.
Life cycle assessment (LCA) of coffee
Read moreThe majority of the carbon footprint of coffee production comes from the growing of coffee beans in the countries of origin. The second biggest impact on the climate is the coffee being prepared and enjoyed. Paulig’s transport, roasting and packaging each represent only a few percent of the environmental impact of coffee during its life cycle, but we still aim to improve every step in our process.
